And believe it or not, they’re still growing — but in a different way than you might think.
3D printing — or additive manufacturing — is at the forefront of new, technology-based manufacturing jobs.
Modern manufacturing jobs are cleaner, easier, and pay better than manufacturing jobs in the past. But they do require more training.
Youngstown is a hub for manufacturing students, companies and — as former Youngstown mayor Jay Williams said — hopefully jobs, too.
“There are 828,000 more manufacturing jobs today than there were six years ago,” former Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams said. “350,000 more still need to be filled and there’s no reason that shouldn’t occur here in Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.”
No doubt, bringing those jobs to Youngstown would make a difference. However, Congressman Tim Ryan said that the technology we have here in the Valley is already making a difference around the world.
“I was on the USS Harry Truman in the Persian Gulf — about 40 miles away from Iran — and there were three or four 3D printers on the ship that were made by students at Choffin here in Youngstown,” he said. “That’s how advanced we are in the new generation of manufacturing technology that’s happening.”
Congressman Ryan also said that students in the Mahoning Valley and Youngstown are getting opportunities in this field that most other kids around the country are not.
